The hits just keep on playing for author Jeff Kinney and his “Wimpy Kid” enterprise of books, games, toys and movies.

Last month, Amulet Books released the expanded edition of “The Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book” that includes more than 60 new pages of material beyond the original version. What a great project for summer!

Within the 60 new pages, there are 32 pages of full-color comics and 16 of these pages are brand new.

The original version sold more than 6 million copies. The book allows readers to become authors, illustrators, and even characters in their own stories they pen.

My ten year old is glued to this book. He wakes up and writes in it and then wants to read to me the funny stuff he has written and drawn. He loves sharing the funny tales both from Kinney and that he writes himself.

The book is filled with graphics, fill-in-the-blank ideas, word balloons, mini-quizzes, comics to finish and places to draw pictures. My soon-to-be-9 year old daughter has already requested a copy for her birthday next month.

“The Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself book creates a biographical portrait of the user that will become a memento to keep alongside their yearbooks and photo albums,” according to a recent press release. And, as Greg Heffley, the main character of the Wimpy Kid books is quick to point out, “This is a JOURNAL, not a diary,” lest someone might think this is a little too “girly” for a boy.

As an added bonus, your child can enter the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Comics Contest (www.wimpykid.com/contest) to try his or her hand at creating a real comic.

Kids ages 6-16 can enter from now until June 10, 2011 – so HURRY! On one 8 2/1×11 piece of white paper, and including your child’s name, phone number and date of birth.

Winners will be announced by Kinney himself at this year’s American Library Annual Conference on June 25, 2011. Prized include $500 for the winner as well as $1,000 for his/her library of choice, and a signed copy of the book from Kinney. Twenty runners-up will win a signed copy of the book.
